Richard Gately

Rye – Richard “Dick” Gately, of Rye, N.H., beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many, passed away peacefully on December 26, 2024, at the age of 91, after a period of declining health. A man of quiet strength and unwavering kindness, he leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and craftsmanship. He was the loving husband of Claire (Downey) Gately. Born in Haverhill, Mass., on November 23, 1933, Dick was the son of the late Charles and Alice (Dewhirst) Gately. Raised and educated in Haverhill, Mass. Richard attended the Haverhill Trade School and Fitchburg State College, becoming an educator at Whittier Regional Vocational High School mid-career. Dick lived a life centered on family and simple joys. He dedicated hours to coaching his kids, not just in sports, but in life, imparting lessons of perseverance, integrity, practicality, and teamwork. Whether it was on the baseball diamond or in the backyard, he was always ready to cheer them on—or toss them a sly joke to keep things light. An avid golfer, Dick enjoyed the camaraderie of his Thursday night men’s league, yet never managed to outscore Claire on the course. At home, as a talented carpenter he found joy in the little things—puttering around the house, fixing what needed fixing, and tinkering in the basement. One of his favorite pastimes was visiting the local swap shop, where he had an uncanny knack for finding treasures. Whether it was a perfectly broken-in baseball glove, a Barbie, or a vintage putter, he delighted in presenting these finds to his kids and grandkids. A man of few words, Dick made every one of them count, offering wisdom, comfort, or humor at just the right moment. Above all, he will be remembered for his kind heart, quick wit, and ability to make anyone feel important and at ease. In addition to his wife, Richard is survived by his children, Charles Gately of Haverhill, Mass., and Beth Rowen and her husband, Christopher, of Rockport, Mass. He is also survived by his sister, Nona Beauvais and her husband, Edward, of Hampstead, N.H., as well as seven grandchildren: Bill, Jon, Matthew, Sarah, Maya, Jayce, and Frew. In addition to his parents, Richard is predeceased by his daughter, Ellen Gately, and his siblings, Edward “Larry” Gately, Alice Gillan, Ann Teoli, Marie Higgins, George Gately, John “Jack,” and Leonard Gately. Family and friends will gather to honor and remember Richard for a period of visitation on Tuesday, December 31, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton, NH, 03842. A prayer service will be held immediately following the visitation at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home.
