Charles Frederick Patterson Jr.

Hampton - Charles Frederick Patterson, Jr., (88), of Hampton, NH and Venice, FL, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 3, 2026. Charlie was born in Malden, MA on July 7, 1937, a son of the late Charles F. & Louise (Fitzgerald) Patterson. He shared over 60 years with his beloved wife, Marion (Mattson) Patterson of Hampton. Charlie was raised in Stoneham, MA and graduated from Stoneham High with the Class of 1955. He was a highly recruited four sport athlete in high school and was drafted as a hard throwing left-handed pitcher by the Milwaukee Braves. He had to temporarily leave baseball when he was drafted into the United States Army and returned to the league after honorably serving his country. Injuries eventually caused him to leave the game he loved so dearly. He met Marion in Malden, MA where she worked as a bank teller and they were married in 1965. The young couple initially settled in Wakefield, MA while Charlie was working at the Melrose YMCA. He took a position as the YMCA Director in Fulton, NY, then as Executive Director of the No. Adams, MA YMCA. Charlie and Marion relocated to Hampton in 1989 when Charlie accepted a position as the Executive Director of the American Red Cross in Beverly, MA. Charlie retired in the mid-1990s. Charlie loved all sports and particularly enjoyed watching his grandsons play football. He served as a high school and college baseball umpire for years right up into his eighties and umpired for the co-ed softball league in Hampton for many years. Charlie served as President of the Rotary in Beverly and as President of the Holy Name Society at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church in Hampton. In addition to his devoted and loving wife Marion, Charlie is survived by his daughters, Cheryl Patterson Fredericks and her husband, Thomas, of Hampton and Stephanie Patterson of Riverview, FL. He also leaves his grandsons, Zachary of Palm Beach Gardens, FL and Jacob Fredericks of Hampton and his sister, Marilyn Goulart of Windham, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister and brother, Patricia Pope and Herbert Patterson. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at noon on May 30th at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, 289 Lafayette Rd., Hampton. For those who cannot attend the Mass, or for those who wish to spend more time with the family, we will be hosting visiting hours in the Church Hall from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. Please feel free to join us for either or both; refreshments will be served in the hall. Burial will be private.
