Rye – Cynthia A. “Cindi” Richard, 55, of Rye, died Friday, October 3, 2014 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston after a brave battle with cancer. Her beloved husband, Dan, was at her bedside. Cindi was born in Detroit, MI on July 29, 1959, to Stanley and Gloria (Dolinski) Filar of Washington Township, MI. Cindi frequently talked of early days in Detroit, growing up with Aunt’s and Uncle’s living next door. During Cindi’s youth, and as the family continued to grow, Stan and Gloria relocated the family to Clinton Township, MI. This is where Cindi spent her adolescent years and attended elementary, middle and high school. In fact, it was during Cindi’s junior year at Fraser High School where she met and fell in love with Dan. Cindi and Dan both attended the University of Michigan, where Cindi studied Medical Technology, worked as an intern at the University of Michigan Hospital, and earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology in 1982. As Cindi’s future began to unfold, her relationship with Dan did the same. Cindi and Dan married in July 1982 and immediately moved to Portsmouth. During their early years, Cindi and Dan lived in West Linn, OR and East Grand Rapids, MI before eventually returning to Rye, NH where they have lived since 1993. During this time, Cindi and Dan loved to hike, ski, and travel the world. Cindi was a favorite guest during trips to Asia as her energy and personality captivated others from different cultures. Rye is also where Cindi and Dan raised their three children, Chloe also of Rye, Cara who is attending the University of Michigan, and Joe attending Auburn University. Cindi’s greatest love is her family and friends. Never… ever… one to miss an event Cindi took great joy in spending time at Seacoast United, Rye Little League, the Rinks of Exeter, and St. Thomas High School. On the very day of Cindi’s original prognosis, the meeting ended with purpose so that Cindi could make it to Joe’s hockey game. Cindi was also an avid and “social!” tennis player, member of a longstanding local book club, and great friend to many. Cindi was a caring and devoted wife and mother. Family and friends were her life. She will be so sadly missed by all who knew and loved her. In addition to her parents, Dan, Chloe, Cara and Joe, family members include brothers, Gregory Filar and his wife Mary Lynn of Michigan, Kenneth Filar and his wife Debra of Ohio, Joseph Filar and his wife Celeste of Texas, and Richard Filar of Michigan; her sisters, Linda Csak and husband Louis of Connecticut, and Carol Prescott and her husband Jim of New Hampshire. Cindi also leaves many nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends. She was predeceased by her sister Janet Filar. A Mass to celebrate Cindi’s life will be held be at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, 815 Central Rd., Rye, at 10:30 AM on Saturday, October 11, followed by a Christian burial with family and close friends at the Rye Central Cemetery. We wish to acknowledge the wonderful team at Mass General Hospital who cared for Cindi and to support advances in lung cancer research. In lieu of flowers, gifts in memory of Cindi Richard may be made in support of Dr. Alice Shaw's research at the Mass General Hospital Cancer Center.
