Gloria J. Hovey

Portsmouth – Gloria J. Hovey, 80, passed away peacefully on July 2, 2025 at her home in Portsmouth, NH. Loving wife of 61 years to retired Portsmouth Firefighter Daniel D. Hovey. She was born on July 11, 1944 in Reading ,MA. The youngest daughter of the late Harvey and Rose (DeRoche) Poore. Gloria graduated from Reading High School Class of 1962. She met the love of her life Daniel D. Hovey at their place of work, Star Market, in Stoneham, MA in 1961. They spent many summer weekends in Groveland, MA and Hudson, NH watching stock car races at the local race track. They enjoyed going to the drive in, playing mini golf and bowling. On her 16th birthday Dan took her to the Frolics in Salisbury, MA to see Paul Anka. They were married on May 3, 1964 at St. Agnes Church in Reading, MA. They settled in Wakefield, MA where she worked as a waitress at The Four Seasons Chinese Restaurant also located n Wakefield, MA. In 1967 they started their family with the birth of their first daughter. Gloria and Dan moved to Portsmouth, NH in 1976 with their two daughters. In 1977 they welcomed a son. Gloria was an exceptional homemaker and caretaker to her family. She enjoyed spending time at the family camp in Barrington, NH, going to many of the New England beaches and also going on numerous family vacations throughout the country. Gloria enjoyed weekend trips to Connecticut with her husband. In the mid to late 80’s, along with her husband, Gloria was a much loved band chaperone for the Portsmouth High School Clipper Marching Band. In 2008 they joined the Pease Greeters. Gloria always had a warm smile and a friendly hand shake as she greeted thousands of military men and women during her time as a greeter. She also enjoyed seeing the troops off as a member of the Fence Force. In addition to her parents, Gloria was predeceased by her two sisters, Dorothy and Janet, and her two brothers, George and Raymond. She is survived by her husband, Daniel, her two daughters, Denise McDonough of Ossipee, NH, Cindi McLaughlin and her husband Mark of Kingston, NH and her son Matthew Hovey of Lynchburg, VA. Gloria also leaves six grandchildren, Kathryn McDonough, Luke McDonough, Benjamin McDonough, Kyle McLaughlin, Corey McLaughlin and Finn Hovey, one sister, Lorraine Herman of Lawrence, MA and many nieces and nephews. Family and friends are invited to a visitation that will be held from 3pm to 6pm on Wednesday July 30, 2025 at Remick and Gendron Funeral-Crematory 811 Lafayette Rd. Hampton, NH 03842.
