Grace Smith

Hampton - Grace Smith, 82, of Hampton, passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by her loving family, on Monday, August 1, 2022. Grace was born on November 8, 1939 on the island of Grasiosa in the Azores, a daughter of the late Bernadino and Maria (Silva) Mello. The Mello family moved to the United States when Grace was 14 years old and lived in Peabody, MA. She lived in Rhode Island and many other locations for a short period of time and eventually settled in Peabody and Salem, MA. That’s where Grace raised her family as a single Mom for many years, and married Sanford Smith in 1984. Grace worked several jobs to ensure her family was cared for and comfortable. She had worked in housekeeping for several area hospitals and retired in the early 2000's from Beverly Hospital. For the remaining years of her life, she lived in Hampton, alongside with her family. Above all else, Grace loved time spent with family; her children and grandchildren were her life. She loved to cook and especially enjoyed the family dinners she hosted each week. Grace loved to laugh and had a fantastic sense of humor. She always told it like it was and always willing to help those less fortunate. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Deborah Eldredge and her ex-husband Robert Foster of Hampton and Manuel Cunha of Seabrook, NH, her grandchildren, James Eldredge, Devin Eldredge, Frank Cunha JR, Marina Cunha, Nicholas Cunha and Jake Cunha and her great grandchildren, Matthew, Jordan, and Liliana May Cunha. She also leaves her siblings, Maria Rodrigues of Romford, RI, Jane Phillips and her husband, Bruce of Salem, MA, Delpina Provost and her husband Michael of Groton, MA, Theresa Stevens and her husband, Donald of Salem, MA, Armandina Grant of Beverly, MA, Daniel Mello and his wife, Maria of Salem, MA and Delcina Goolsby of NH. In addition to her parents, Grace was predeceased by her husband, Sanford Smith, her son, Frank Cunha, Sr., her sister, Helen Dobriera and her brother, Antonio Mello. Visiting hours will be from 10 AM to 12 PM on Friday, August 5, 2022 in the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Burial will be in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton, immediately following the visitation.
