Portsmouth – It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Sergeant Jacob C. Wolterbeek IX, a beloved husband, father, son, brother, uncle, cousin, friend, and respected member of the police force. Sergeant Wolterbeek, 41, passed away on December 12, 2024. Jacob was the kind of man whose love for his family and friends was immeasurable, whose laughter filled every room, and whose presence made everything feel just a little brighter. Among all the things that made Jacob who he was, there was one love that stood above all else: his incredible love for his wife, Julie. Their love was something rare and beautiful—a partnership built on respect, trust, and an unwavering devotion to one another. Through all of life’s ups and downs, Jacob and Julie stood side by side, facing everything together. It wasn’t just the big moments that made their relationship special, but the little ones—those quiet evenings spent together, the shared glances, and the way they laughed at each other’s jokes like they were hearing them for the first time. Jacob adored Julie in a way that only true love can inspire—his eyes would light up whenever he spoke of her, and his affection for her was evident in every word, every gesture, every act of kindness. Jacob was also an incredible father. To his children, he was a hero—a constant source of guidance, support, and above all, love. His ability to make them feel cherished, every single day, was something that will live on in their hearts forever. Jacob had a gift for making his girls feel like the most beautiful, special people in the world. Whether it was with a simple compliment or a heartfelt message, he would always remind them of their worth. He didn’t just tell them they were beautiful; he showed them what true beauty meant—through kindness, laughter, and a love that never wavered. One of Jacob's greatest joys was being outside with his son, playing in the yard and riding the tractor around the block. It was their time. Their adventure. The tractor wasn’t just a vehicle—it was a symbol of Jacob's quiet strength, his nurturing spirit, and his love for teaching his son how to be a man of character. Jacob cherished these moments, and they will remain etched in the hearts of his son and everyone who knew him. His dad jokes—endlessly cheesy, but always delivered with a wink and a smile—became a cornerstone of the home he and Julie built. No matter how many times they had heard the punchline, Julie and the kids couldn't help but laugh. It was Jacob’s way of making sure that laughter filled their lives, that joy would always find a way to shine, even on the toughest days. As the second child in a very large family, Jacob loved his entire family with his whole heart. His family was his rock, and he cherished every moment with them. Jacob found joy in the little things—watching nieces and nephews play their team games, decorating Christmas cookies, enjoying appetizers, a family dinner, or time at Swan’s Island. He was always willing to help, especially if that help required using an excavator, tractor or chainsaw, even if they weren’t really necessary. His love for his family was evident in everything he did, and he made sure they knew how deeply he cared. Jacob was the one who reached out, who checked in, who made plans. He was the glue and he managed to have meaningful relationships with everyone in his life. A dedicated and passionate member of the law enforcement community for over 18 years, Jacob’s commitment to his work was unwavering. As a Sergeant, he led by example, embodying the values of integrity, bravery, and service. His fellow officers often remarked that he served with compassion, thoughtfulness and humor. He was a protector of his community, always ready to step up when needed, and he took immense pride in knowing he made a difference every day. His sense of humor, kindness, and larger-than-life personality made him a beloved figure not only among his colleagues but with everyone he encountered. Jay was a man of action and those actions always improved the lives of those around him. Jacob was known for his infectious laugh and his ability to lighten any room with his jokes and stories. Despite the challenges of his job, he always found a way to make others smile, spreading warmth and positivity wherever he went. His genuine, kind-hearted nature touched countless lives, and those who knew him will remember his loyalty, generosity, and the way he made everyone feel like family. Jacob’s legacy will live on through his family, friends, and colleagues. He will be incredibly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His contributions to law enforcement, his unwavering love for his family, and his enduring spirit of kindness and humor will never be forgotten. Jacob is survived by his loving wife Julie, parents Ky & Jake Wolterbeek VIII, his children, Evelyn, Emma and Jacob X “Jack”; siblings, Ellen (Joe), Daniel (Jen), Candy (Emarie), Tatyana (Kris), Alexis (Sam), Anna, Owen, and Hope; many nieces and nephews and a large extended family. A walk-thru for police officers and other public safety personnel will be held from 4:00 until 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 18, 2024 at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Public visiting hours will follow from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. in the funeral home. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 AM on Thursday, December 19, 2024 at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, 289 Lafayette Road, Hampton and can be viewed via livestream by clicking here the hour of the mass.
