James M. Chase

Rye - It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of James M. Chase (BIG JIM), who died peacefully on June 20th, 2026, at the age of 88, surrounded by his loving family. Jim was born on March 13, 1938 in Kittery, ME to Samuel J. Chase and Ruth C. Sip. He served in the Army stationed in Germany for three years and 3 months. He was a devoted husband, loving father, cherished grandfather, and loyal friend whose kindness, humor, and quiet strength touched everyone who knew him. Jim dedicated over 30 years to his career at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard where he was respected for his hard work and integrity and retired in 1993. He continued to work part time in his retirement years for the town of Rye DPW and then Rye Library. He found joy in spending time with his grandchildren, trips to Florida, and cheering on his favorite sports teams. He especially treasured family gatherings, where his stories, laughter, and steady presence created lasting memories. Above all, Jim was devoted to his family. He was a proud father who encouraged his children to pursue their dreams and a grandfather who never missed an opportunity to attend a game, recital, or school event. His grandchildren will forever remember his warm hugs, wise advice, and the special traditions he created with each of them. Jim is survived by; his children, Judy Chase of Kittery, ME, Mark and Theresa Chase of Dover, NH and Jimmie and Lisa Chase of Rye, Rick and Lolita Williams of Somersworth, NH and his cherished grandchildren, Frank Goss of Kittery, ME, James M. Goss of Sanford, ME, Joshua Bickley of Kittery, ME and Jacob Bickley of Portsmouth, NH. Lindsey and Ryan Thornton of Rollinsford, NH, Cameron J. Chase, of Rye, and Alyssa Chase of Newmarket, NH. Sixteen great grandchildren. His sister Sandra J. McCarthy of TX, brothers Robert P. Chase of Dover, NH and Michael F. Chase, of New Durham, NH. Longtime Companion Sharon Good of Rye. He was preceded in death by brothers William J. Chase, Charles S. Chase, and sisters Patricia J. Chase, Lucille M. Chase (Bunny). Longtime mate Reva Williams and her daughter Crystal Williams. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project online by clicking here for a cause that was close to Jim’s heart. Jim’s legacy lives in the values he instilled, the love he shared, and the family he cherished. Though he will be deeply missed, his memory will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, July 11th at 9 am at Rye Cemetery, 20 Central Road, Rye, NH.
