Janet M. Moulen

Rye - Janet Maxine Moulen, 93, passed away peacefully on August 12, 2025 with family by her side at her camp on Mousam Lake, Maine. Jan was born October 28, 1931 to the late Howard E. and Laura M. (Tilton) Shedd in Mattawamkeag, Maine. After graduating high school in Mattawamkeag, class of 1949, she attended Husson College in Bangor, Maine and worked at Rice and Miller Company for a short time until becoming a stay at home Mom. On September 9, 1951, Jan married Thomas Moulen. In 1955, they bought their home in Rye, NH where they raised their two daughters Belinda and Deborah In 1961, they bought their camp on Mousam Lake in Shapleigh, Maine where they loved spending time with family and friends - a love that continues through four generations. Their family is grateful for the memories of this special place. Jan was an active member of the Rye Congregational Church. Those who knew her will remember her gentle kindness and unwavering commitment to helping others. She spent time visiting nursing home patients and delivering meals to people in their homes. For many years, she delivered May baskets filled with her homemade fudge and cookies. Jan loved to cook and prepared delicious meals and desserts for her family as well as for gatherings and church events. She also loved to knit and crochet, making beautiful afghans and baby sweaters. She was an avid bridge player, and enjoyed getting together with her bridge friends. Jan loved animals, especially her pug dog Daisy and her grand-dog Kaiser. Jan’s kindness will be missed. If she had a motto to live by, it would have been: “In a world where you can be anything, be kind.” She will be missed dearly by her family, as well as her "Mousam Lake family". Jan is survived by her two daughters, Belinda Bowling of Sanbornville, NH and Deborah Churchwell and her fiancé William Towle of Rye, NH and William’s children Bridget Gibbons and husband Jay of Derry, NH and Wyatt Towle of MA; her grandson Marc Johnson and granddaughter Rene Splittorff of Rochester, NH; great granddaughter Alexis Gowen of Milton, NH; brothers Derward Shedd and wife Betty of Millinockett, ME and Alton Shedd and wife Mary of Lincoln, ME; several cousins, nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Thomas Moulen; sisters Charlotte York and Althea Wallace; brother Galen Shedd and several aunts and uncles including her favorite Uncle Elmer Tilton. Jan’s family is grateful for the caring staff at Wentworth and Beacon Hospice A memorial service will be held at 2 pm on Thursday, September 11, 2025 at the Southern Maine Veterans Cemetery, 83 Stanley Rd Springvale, ME. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
