Martha S. Elliott

Exeter - Martha Susan Elliott of Exeter, NH passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 5, 2024, at age 94 after a long and loving life. Martha, who went by Sue, was born on August 24, 1930, in Winchester, MA to Warren Harold and Martha Susan (Delorey) Nixon. She attended St. Mary’s School in Winchester, and Winchester High School. In 1959, Sue married her husband George Elliott, also of Winchester. They had two beautiful daughters, and moved to Portsmouth, NH in 1963. After raising her family, Sue worked part time at the fabric counter at Woolworth’s in Portsmouth, and later at Portsmouth Hospital, where she assisted patients with settling into their hospital rooms. Sue enjoyed chatting with the public, and always had a smile on her face. Sue enjoyed all kinds of crafts and was an avid sewer. She loved her weekly “Knitting Club” nights, where she would get together with numerous friends and chat while they knitted. She also enjoyed her swimming group of “Pool Pals” and talking to the staff at the Portsmouth Indoor Pool. She was known for looking after everyone she met and sending greeting cards for every special occasion. Sue is survived by her two daughters, Karen (Elliott) Freeman and her partner Larry Harper of Thornton, CO, Elaine Elliott-Leavitt and her husband Jeffery Leavitt of Rye, NH, granddaughter Gabrielle Leavitt of Boston, MA, son-in-law Howard Freeman of Salida, CO, sister Pauline Cooke of Epsom, NH, and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Sue was predeceased by her loving husband George Elliott, older sisters Ruth Garvey, Margaret Barrow, Theresa Queen, and brother Frederick Nixon. Visitation will be held from 5-7 pm on Tuesday, September 10, 2024 in the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton, NH 03842, where we will gather to remember and honor Sue. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 am on Wednesday, September 11, 2024 at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal church, 289 Lafayette Road, Hampton, NH 03842. Interment will be at the NH State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen, NH at a later date, where she will be reunited with her beloved husband George, the love of her life. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in memory of Martha Susan Elliott to support dementia research and patient care and support.
