Peter E. Kane

Rye – Peter E. Kane, 62 of Rye, NH passed away peacefully at home on Friday, January 2, 2026, surrounded by his loving family and the care and support of family and friends in the months leading up to his passing. Peter was born in Methuen, MA on April 6, 1963, to John and Virginia Kane. He was the youngest of their five children. In his younger years Peter grew up in Andover, MA and summered in Plaice Cove in Hampton, NH. Eventually the salt air and crashing waves drew his family in and they settled year-round at the “Sundowner” at Plaice Cove. This was the foundation for Peter’s deep respect and love for the ocean. The Sundowner became the source of many family gatherings and fun traditions. He always said he had the best childhood anyone could ever ask for. With his blue eyes and unruly blond hair, Peter became the unofficial lifeguard of Plaice Cove. He spent endless days on the beach with his brother David and a close circle of ‘Cove’ friends surfing, swimming and sailing. Strength, bravery, and courage were hallmarks of Peter’s character. In the aftermath of the Blizzard of 1978, he rowed a boat through the flooded streets of Plaice Cove with his father, rescuing and helping stranded neighbors. In 1988, he was again hailed as a hero after rescuing a couple stranded nearly a mile offshore during a thunderstorm. One witness recalled, “I thought they must have been in a motorboat, but they were only in a rowboat—and they rowed right out.” In 1982, Peter married the love of his life, Carrie Miles. During their first ten years of marriage, they were always together—camping, boating, riding motorcycles, skiing and taking college courses side-by-side. In 1993, he became the ultimate father with the arrival of their son, Caleb Miles Kane, followed by the arrival of their beautiful daughter, Riley Caroline Kane, in 1995. Peter and Carrie shared 43 years of marriage filled with love and adventure. He loved playing pond hockey and coaching both kids when they were young. He taught both kids to surf, enjoying countless days in the line up with a wide circle of friends that referred to him as the ‘Big Kahuna’. He was a constant presence on the sidelines of every high school and college game his kids played, supporting them with pride and passion. Nothing mattered more to him than his wife and kids, who were always the center of his life - along with his beloved Labrador retrievers. Peter was extremely proud to welcome Nicholas Veino into the family as his son-in-law in June 2024; and equally proud to welcome Margaret Wraight into the family as his daughter-in-law in September 2024. He loved them as his own. A true master carpenter, Peter ran his own business for more than 35 years, bringing meticulous care and excellence to every project and leaving behind a legacy of craftsmanship he was deeply proud of. He was responsible for countless fine home improvements throughout the Seacoast. He would often reflect on completed projects—recalling weather challenges, sharing funny stories about the crews he worked with, and often concluding with “I work with the best people on earth.” He was known for his strong work ethic, dedication to mentoring those entering the trades, unwavering reliability, and quick sense of humor, making him a loyal and steadfast friend to many. Peter also had a passion for travel and adventure, visiting destinations such as Greece, Switzerland, and Israel, and enjoying countless family vacations to Martha’s Vineyard, Captiva, the Bahamas, St. Maarten, and Puerto Rico, among many others. Most recently, he spent a cherished week on Martha’s Vineyard with family and close friends — a time that became a true highlight for all who shared it with him. Peter leaves behind his beloved wife, Carrie; his son, Caleb Kane, and daughter-in-law, Maggie Kane; his daughter, Riley Kane Veino, and son-in-law, Nick Veino; his sister, Judith Huebner (Otto Huebner); and his brothers, Jack Kane (Melissa Alden), Charlie Kane (Darcy Kane), and David Kane (David Diaz). He is also survived by his wife’s family, who regarded him as their family patriarch: Natalie Miles; Tracey Rich; Charlie Miles; Jennifer Enos; Abigail Miles; and Martha Stanley, as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will forever cherish his memory. Peter was predeceased by his parents, John and Virginia Kane. During a brave 15-month battle against esophageal cancer, Peter continued to cherish every moment with the people he loved most. His strength, love, and laughter will always remain in the hearts of those who knew him. Family and friends are invited to gather, honor and remember Peter during visitation on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Remick & Gendron Funeral Home, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton, NH. A private celebration of Peter’s life will be held in the spring.
