Susan Jane Jones

Plymouth NH- Susan Jane (Scruton) Jones, 77, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 23, 2026, surrounded by her children. Susan was born on July 14, 1949, in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, to Gilman and Lucille (Gardner) Scruton. When Susan was 14 years old, she experienced the loss of her father. During that difficult time, her maternal grandmother, Ida May Gardner, became a special source of love, guidance, and stability. Susan spent much of her childhood and teenage years at Ida May’s home, where she was surrounded by the warmth, traditions, and strong sense of family that Ida May passed on to her. The bond they shared had a lasting impact on Susan and shaped the values that guided her throughout her life. Susan cherished the relationships she built with her extended family growing up. Her aunts, uncles, and cousins were an important part of her life, and the time they spent together created many treasured memories. Family gatherings were filled with laughter, stories, music, and singing. Those moments became the foundation for the close-knit family life she later created for her own children and grandchildren. As she grew older, Susan became a role model to her nieces and nephews, who admired her strength, independence, and the way she cared for the people around her. Music remained a special part of Susan’s life. Although she never learned to read music, she had a natural ability to pick up almost any instrument and play by ear after spending time with it. It brought her joy and was one of the many ways she connected with the people she loved. Susan’s life included many adventures and experiences that shaped who she was. During her years with her husband, Victor A. Jones, she traveled and lived in different places while raising their family. Their journey included time at Loring Air Force Base in Limestone, Maine; Bolling Air Force Base in Washington, D.C.; and RAF Mildenhall in England before eventually settling in New Hampshire. Susan embraced each new chapter and carried those experiences with her throughout her life. Susan was hardworking and independent, taking pride in every role she held throughout her life. She worked as a school bus driver and in other positions where she brought dedication, reliability, and a strong work ethic. She was especially proud of her time at Pease Air Force Base, where she was one of only a few women at the time to work in a traditionally male field. She operated snowplows and other heavy equipment on the runways, assisted with construction projects, and transported pilots to and from their aircraft. Susan loved bringing people together, whether for a holiday, a camping trip, a visit with family and friends, or simply sitting around sharing stories and laughter. She had a gift for making people feel welcome and creating memories her family will cherish for years to come. Susan enjoyed cheering on the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots and sharing her thoughts and opinions during spirited conversations about politics. She had a quick wit, an independent spirit, and a way of making people laugh. After Victor’s passing in 2003, Susan continued to build a life filled with family, friendship, and love. In 2005, she met Val Dubois, who became a beloved part of her life. Their years together brought Susan companionship, comfort, and unwavering support. She also treasured the relationships she formed with Val’s family, including his children, Kim Major and her husband, David, Cassie Constant and her husband, Joey, and Val’s brothers and sisters, all of whom welcomed Susan as one of their own. Val cared for Susan with great love, patience, and devotion during her later years, and her family is deeply grateful for the kindness and care he gave her. Susan is survived by her partner, Val Dubois of Plymouth; her children, Paula Devens and her husband, John, of Pittsfield; William Jones of Rochester; Heather Clogston and her husband, Casino, of Plymouth; and Victoria Tavares Camara and her husband, Diogo, of Rochester. She was a proud grandmother to David, Grace, Ruby, Louis, Jenny, Josie, Leevi, Connor, Zachary, Hunter, Lincoln, Siena, Victor, Hallie, Myles, and Elliot. Her grandchildren were her greatest joy, and she cherished watching them grow and celebrating each of their accomplishments. She also leaves behind Stephanie Jones, David Bennett, and many other beloved extended family members and friends who shared a special connection with Susan and will miss her dearly. Susan was predeceased by her husband, Victor A. Jones; her brothers, Gilman (Gilly) and Herbert (Herbie) Scruton; and her sister, Linda Bowden. Susan will be remembered for her strength, independence, humor, and generous heart. She had a gift for making people feel welcome, keeping family traditions alive, and creating memories that will be cherished for generations. Her music, laughter, and love will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. Calling hours will be held on Friday, July 31, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory in Hampton, New Hampshire, with a funeral service beginning at 12:00 p.m. Burial and a celebration of Susan’s life will take place at a later date. In true Susan fashion, her family invites those attending to come dressed comfortably and casually. Susan would love to see everyone wearing their favorite sports apparel or something representing their favorite team as a way to celebrate her love of sports, family, and the people who brought her so much joy.
