Thomas J. Schmitt Sr.

Portsmouth, NH – Thomas J. Schmitt Sr., 89, a longtime resident of Portsmouth, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and their love on Wednesday, November 30, 2022. He was born May 9, 1933 in Milwaukee, WI son of the late Ernest and Irene (McCann) Schmitt. Raised in Milwaukee, he attended the Catholic school system in Milan and graduated from Vocational Technical School. In 1952 at the age of 19 he enlisted in the United States Airforce and proudly served during the Korean and Vietnam War, retiring in 1974 after 22 years of service. After his career in the service Tom started his second career as a metal fabricator for Neslab Instruments in Newington, retiring in 1996 as a supervisor after 24 years. Tom was an avid fan of the Red Sox, Patriots and Packers. He enjoyed traveling to Germany many times with his wife, reading, fishing, playing the organ, listening to the big bands of yesteryear and watching old movies. He was a longtime volunteer for Portsmouth Regional Hospital in Portsmouth, accumulating over 2500 hours of volunteer work. Tom was a kind and loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and great great grandfather who will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Surviving family members include his wife, Carol (Nocera) Schmitt of Portsmouth; sons, John Schmitt and his wife Lauri of Lexington, MA and Thomas Schmitt Jr. and his wife Dianna of Eliot, ME; step children, Susan Fionte and her husband Paul of No. Andover, MA, Donna Rogers of Andover, MA, Linda Martel and her husband Paul of No. Andover, MA and Frank Nocera of Buffalo, NY; sister, Geraldine Schmitt Hickey of Milwaukee, WI; grandchildren, Kristina and Isabel; step grandchildren, Jessica, Lauren, Caley, Paul, Eddie, Nicole and Jason; great grandchildren, Kaylee, Zachary and Lily; step great grandsons, Leo and Mason and great great grandson, Declan. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife Maria Schmitt and sister, Mary Jane Wittmann. Visiting hours will be from 4-7 P.M. on Tuesday, December 6, 2022 at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 A.M. on Wednesday, December 7, 2022 at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, 289 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Burial will follow in the Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited.
