Burlington, MA – Betty Ann “B.A.” Callanan, 88, of Burlington and formerly of Hampton, NH, returned to God on August 10, 2021. Betty was born June 14, 1933 (Flag Day) in Schenectady, New York, a daughter of the late James and Margaret (Leonard) Kalteux. She loved her life and shared that love with her friends and family as the glue who maintained connections by correspondence and social gatherings. From an early age, “B.A.” was a great reader and a prolific chronicler of life and family events in a carefully maintained diary that spanned forty years. She enjoyed animals, music of all kinds (especially playing the guitar), handmade crafts, and fishing. Her beloved husband John Callanan and she shared over 50 years of their good-natured humor, generous hospitality, and devoted faith-filled life with everyone they knew. She is survived by her brother James Kalteux (Mary) of Schenectady, NY, cousin Toby Hoare (Molly) of Newburyport, MA, daughter Elizabeth Callanan Hutchinson (Robert) of Wellesley, MA, daughter Theresa Callanan O'Callaghan of Portsmouth, NH, and son Michael Callanan (Linda) of Melrose, MA. Loving grandchildren: Jack Callanan, Tommy Callanan, Mary Callanan, Grace Hutchinson, and Sarah Hutchinson. She is also survived by cherished in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews and many great friends. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband John M. Callanan and her brother Thomas Kalteux. Betty Ann grew up in Schenectady, NY and spent her summers at Brant Lake, NY in the Adirondack Mountains. She was a proud graduate of Nott Terrace High School and a 1955 French major and graduate of Skidmore College. From there, she moved to New York City to work for International General Electric (GE) and returned to Schenectady to work for the Knolls Atomic Research Lab and to teach elementary school. She married John Callanan from Malden, MA in 1958. With his partnership, she raised three children who had the joy of her parenting, devotion, creativity, sense of fun, impeccable manners, and quick wit. B.A. and John lived in a succession of locations with John’s GE career moves including: Schenectady, Binghamton, and Clifton Park, NY, Wellesley and Hamilton, MA; and Hampton, NH where they retired and lived for 22 years. Most recently, Betty Ann lived in Burlington, MA at Atria Longmeadow Place, and her family is grateful for the care she received at Atria. There will be no visiting hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 AM on Friday, August 13, 2021 at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, 289 Lafayette Rd., Hampton where B.A. was previously an engaged parishioner.
