Robert R. Mayberry Sr. Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Portsmouth – Robert R. Mayberry, Sr., 79, a longtime Portsmouth resident of over 48 years passed away peacefully surrounded by family, Sunday October 11, 2015 after a courageous battle with lung cancer. Robert was born in Hickman County, TN July 12, 1936 a son of the late Colonel and Hattie (Carter) Mayberry. He was raised in Nashville, TN, graduating in 1955 from Carver Smith High School in Columbia, TN. Soon after high school he enlisted into the US Air Force. He and his family were stationed at numerous bases overseas and across the United States bringing them to Pease Air Force Base where he honorably retired as a Tech Sergeant in 1975 with 20 years of service. After his military career he was employed at Atlantic Terminal Corporation in Newington and Bailey Corporation in Seabrook. Robert was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He thoroughly enjoyed his grandchildren, travel, listening to blues music, watching real life crime shows on television and he was also an avid sports enthusiast. He was a selfless and generous man who always made himself available to help his family. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Shirley Y. (Cole) Mayberry in 2011. Family members include his children, Robert Jr., of Portsmouth, Michelle of Austin, TX, Derick, and Lealoni both of Portsmouth, Melonie Higgins and her husband Timothy of MD, Tina of Lee, Danielle Nilson and husband Ian of IL, grandchildren, Roserain, Dahlia, Milo, Dylan, Abrianna, Cecilia, Skylar, Andrew, Derick II, and Jaxston, his 3 great grandchildren, his sisters, JoAnn Bouler of Detroit, MI, Delores Caruthers of Nashville, TN and his many nieces and nephews.. In addition to his wife he was predeceased by his son Duane, granddaughter, Riley Grace, and his siblings, John, Elvis, Carter and Kathleen.
