Robert E. Welch Sr.

Seabrook – Robert Edward Welch, Sr., 83, of Seabrook, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 11, 2018 after a sudden illness at High Pointe Hospice in Haverhill, MA with devoted family at his bedside. He was born on May 7, 1934 in Newburyport, MA a son of the late Eugene E. and Rosalie (Eaton) Welch. Robert was raised in Salisbury, Ma and graduated from Newburyport High School with the Class of 1952. He enlisted in the in the United States Navy immediately after graduation and saw the world. After the service he went to work in the Combat Systems Office as an electronics mechanical foreman at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard where he worked on overhaul and repairs of nuclear submarines. He retired from the shipyard in 1989 with 34 years of service. To say that Robert was an aviation enthusiast is an understatement. Robert loved aviation and built and flew his own aircraft out of Amesbury Airfield. He was a member of many flying clubs including Experimental Aircraft Association, Seaplane Pilots Association, Luscombe Association and enjoyed traveling to airshows all over the country in his RV. Robert loved to share memories of his time on the U.S.S. Kidd and was very proud of his service. He also was very passionate about animals. His two cats, Tish and Daisy meant the world to him. Robert also enjoyed camping, visiting museums, reading about military and aviation history, classic country music and New England Sports, especially the Red Sox and the Patriots. He is survived by his son, Robert E. Welch, Jr. and his wife, Maribel of Bridgeville, DE, his daughters, Alicia McLaughlin and her husband John, Susan Dailey and her husband William, all of Hampton, his brothers, William C. Welch and wife Sandra and Eugene E. Welch Jr. and wife Peggy, both of Seabrook and his grandchildren, Christopher Gilmore, Matthew Welch, Michelle Lane and Alec McLaughlin. He also leaves his longtime companion, Janet Murphy and many nieces and nephews. Robert is predeceased by four sisters, Florence Welch, Jeanette Sturgis, Alice Marston and Helen Moore. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 pm on Monday, March 19, 2018 in the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home – Crematory, 811 Lafayette Rd., Hampton. Services will be held at 10 am on Tuesday in the funeral home with burial to follow in the Hillside Cemetery, Seabrook. If desired, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the SPCA.
