Betty J. Hanscom

Somersworth - Betty J. Hanscom, 85, passed away on March 20, 2025, peacefully in her daughters’ arms. She faced a courageous battle with esophageal cancer after being diagnosed in September of 2023, not long after the passing of her beloved son, Maurice Hanscom, on July 5, 2023. Formerly she was a resident of Portsmouth, NH for many years and was originally born in Kittery Point Maine, to the late John and Viola (Hazel) Mitrook. She had many sisters and brothers, of which most have passed on, except a few. Later she married and had several children. Mostly she had been a housewife fostering other children, as well as babysitting for others, but also had been a Sunday school teacher, and had several other jobs thereafter. She moved to Somersworth, NH in August of 2019, after loosing her husband, Arthur H. Hanscom Jr., of Sixty years. Here she had found a house she absolutely loved and adored to make new memories. A place where everything was new and in a neighborhood of wonderful people. There she had met this very sweet couple across the way that welcomed her from day one. They were always there for her. Thank you, Marylynn and David. She had surprised most of us with her strength to live, but as her family grew it was the love for her great grandchildren that she fought for, one which she had lost on March 17, 2012. They were her everything and she was determined to be there for them. Sadly, she fought a long battle as long as she could but got to lay her head at rest in her own home, of what she had wanted, surrounded by her loved ones. Surviving children are Donna Clark, her husband John, and their son Joe, all of Lee, Nancy Hanscom of Portsmouth, John Hanscom and his wife Betty (Elizabeth), their children Melissa, Eddie, and Tommy, all of South Berwick, ME, Carol Hanscom of Somersworth, and Wanda Scates and her husband Lance of Manchester, and Sandra Hanscom, her husband Tom Medeiros, their children Nick Medeiros, Alex Medeiros and his wife Samantha, all of Somersworth. She also leaves behind several cherished great grandchildren. No services will be held at this time. A private gathering will be planned in her honor at her beloved home. Donations in her memory, as well as floral donations in honor of her love of flowers, may be given to Wentworth Douglass Cancer Center in Dover, NH, truly a very caring team of Angels.
