Carol E. Tynan

Exeter- Carol E. Tynan was born in Rockville Centre, New York on May 7, 1933 and was the daughter of the late Kenneth E. and Vera J. (Smith) Wilson. She grew up in Roosevelt, a small town on Long Island just east of New York City. Though the Great Depression and World War II served as the backdrop for her early years, Carol enjoyed a very happy childhood. She spent many summers at the family bungalow in Ocean Beach, a small town on the barrier island of Fire Island. Later, the family went on many road trips to upstate New York and New England. Carol attend Hempstead High School and was a member of the “Tigerette” drill team that performed at the Hempstead Tigers football games. She graduated in 1949 at age 16 and went on to take a secretarial course at The Scudder School in Manhattan, which she completed a year later. After completing her studies at Scudder, Carol took a secretarial position with American Zinc Products in Manhattan. She remained socially active while working in New York and was honored to be selected as Most Beloved Queen of the Freeport Chapter of the Daughters of the Eastern Star in 1951. Around that time, Carol met the love of her life, William R. “Bill” Tynan. Bill had also grown up in Roosevelt, but he was three years older than Carol and they had never met. After a whirlwind romance their engagement was announced on January 19, 1952. They were married six months later on July 20th and raised three children at their homes in Farmingdale and Dix Hills, New York. They moved to Glastonbury, Connecticut in 1974 and later to Southwick, Massachusetts. Carol and Bill enjoyed a 32-year retirement together during which they were inseparable. Their shared interests included golf, bowling and card games of all sorts. They spent a good deal of time in Stuart and elsewhere in Florida and traveled extensively. Carol was an excellent cook and was often a member of the local Gourmet Club. She also loved to knit. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren all enjoyed receiving sweaters that were “Made by Grammy” as did the many others who eagerly purchased her sweaters at the church bazaars she volunteered at over the years. Bill always said that he was lucky to be married to Carol for sixty-five years, three months and eighteen days. He could also break it down to the minute on any given day for anyone who wanted him to be more precise. After his death in 2017, Carol moved to Portsmouth to be near family where she was a resident of Wentworth Senior Living. Though she suffered from Alzheimer’s disease for many years, she never lost her sunny disposition and will be missed by all who knew her! Carol E. Tynan left this world on March 2, 2026 to rejoin Bill, her parents and all the many friends and family with whom she shared such a rich and happy life. She is survived by her three children: Steve and his wife Lois of Exeter, Nancy Lillie of Boulder, Colorado and Doug and his wife Ellen of Branford, Connecticut; by her five grandchildren: Chris Tynan (Amber) of Exeter, Elyse Wilson (Korie) of Hampton, Mark Lillie of Toronto, Canada, Silas Tynan of West Hartford, Connecticut and Bryce Tynan of Weathersfield, Connecticut; and by her three great grandsons: Josh Ward (Marissa Lane) of Exeter, Brody Tynan of Exeter and Bentley Wilson of Hampton. Interment was at Rye Central Cemetery. The family wants to express its heartfelt appreciation to the entire staff at Wentworth Senior Living for their genuine kindness, sensitivity and expert care. They made a wonderful home for Carol during the last eight plus years of her journey.
