Charles Henry Cummings Jr.

Greenland - Charles Henry Cummings Jr. of Greenland, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 10, 2026, at Edgewood Center in Portsmouth surrounded by his family. He was the loving husband of the late Lizbeth (Brennan) Cummings. Born July 25, 1948 in Plymouth NH to Charles H. Cummings Sr. and Helen Elizabeth Miller. Attended Holderness School in Plymouth NH 1963-1966. Enrolled at UNH Durham 1966-1970. Graduated September 1970. While at UNH, Charles(Charlie) met and married Lizbeth K. Brennan of Hampton NH August 1970 and in the following months enlisted in US Army September of the same year. Charlie was widowed in 2022 after 51 years of marriage to Liz. After basic training at Ft. Dix, NJ, he attended Advanced Individual Training at the Army Adjutant School in Indianapolis Indiana. He was assigned to Headquarters Company, Ft. Myer, Virginia and thereafter worked at the Army Operations Center (AOC) in the Pentagon for the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Military Operations. He Served as a Non Commissioned Officer in Charge of the Emergency Actions Branch in the Operations Center for approximately two years. In September 1973, Charlie and Liz returned to civilian life in NH where he worked at Pease Air Force Base in various positions in Civil Engineering and later as Head of the Reports and Analysis Branch in the 509th Transportation Squadron. They moved from Portsmouth to Greenland in 1976, after which in 1991 transferred to the Industrial Relations Office at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard where he served as Incentive Awards Program Manager for three years and then became Head of the Employee Services Branch. While working in Employee Services he served as a member of the Board of Directors for the National Association of Suggestion Systems and as the National Treasurer from 1988-1991.Thereafter he worked as a Labor Relations Specialist for approximately twelve years. At the conclusion of his civil service career he served as Chief Spokesman for Management while negotiating the collective bargaining agreement between the Shipyard and the American Federation of Government Employees. Upon successful completion of this agreement, he retired from Civil service in May of 2004. Once retired, he served on various boards and committees for the town of Greenland, including twelve years as a member of the Greenland Budget Committee, three years on the Conservation Committee, two years on the Land Use Advisory Committee and four years as a member of the Greenland Board of Selectmen from 2008-2011. From 2004 to 2018, he worked as an agricultural assistant at the Saltbox Farm in Stratham NH. Outside of his professional commitments and accomplishments Charlie was devoted to his family and community. He often lent his time and services voluntarily to the town without solicitation. He was an avid golf lover, a hobby carpenter, and constantly kept his kids at the forefront of his success stories. Charlie leaves his sons, Charles H. Cummings III of Somersworth, Matthew Cummings and his wife Cristina, and his two granddaughters of Dover. Family and friends will gather to honor and remember Charles for a period of visitation on Monday, May 18, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton, NH 03842. A graveside service will take place on Tuesday, May 19, 2026 at 11AM at Prospect Hill Cemetery, 100 Post Road, Greenland, NH 03820.
