John J. Marr

North Hampton- John James Marr, 83, of North Hampton, NH, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 11, 2025, with his loving family by his side. Born on October 31st, 1941, in Jersey City, NJ he was the son of the late John and Margaret (Furey) Marr. Throughout his life, he reveled in being a “Halloween baby.” After graduation from Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey, he entered the Air Force in Texas as an aircraft maintenance officer. He attended Texas Christian University in Forth Worth for his Master’s degree in American History. During his twenty-two years in the Air Force, he was stationed in Michigan, Thailand, Louisiana, Guam, and New Hampshire, retiring as a Major from Pease Air Force Base in 1984. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, and the Air Force Commendation Medal. After retirement, John and Cathy purchased a small house in Arizona to frequently visit their two daughters. John also attended many Fall Ball and Spring Training baseball games during the trips. He was proud to be a lector at St. Theresa Church in Rye and a volunteer at the St. Vinent de Paul Society in Hampton. As an owner of a 1991 British Racing Green Miata, he enjoyed joining the NH M’sters Club in traveling the country for 34 years in his “MEAHDA” convertible. John took a genuine interest in others and would immediately ask your college major upon meeting you. He considered everyone he met a friend. His frequent phone calls to his children, often asking about the local weather, were a simple but touching reminder of how much he cared for them. John is survived by his sister, Margaret Fleischman, from Voorhees, New Jersey. He also leaves behind his beloved wife of 53 years Catherine (Merkel) Marr, his children: Paul Marr, Kristen (Marr) Thomasson, and Katelen Marr, his son-in-law James “Jet” Thomasson, daughter-in-law Christine (Oravec) Marr, and four adored grandchildren: Avery and Caden Marr and Casey and Cole Thomasson. To his grandchildren, he was simply PaPa – a title he wore proudly. His family was the heart of his world. Visitation will be held from 4 p.m to 7 p.m on Monday, July 21, 2025 in the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 22 at 11 AM at St. Theresa Parish, 815 Central Road, Rye. Burial will follow in the Center Cemetery, North Hampton.
