Jon B. Adams

Jon B. Adams, age 78, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and longtime resident of North Hampton, NH, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, May 7th, 2023, at Exeter Hospital surrounded by his family. He was the loving husband of 54 years of Janice E. (Palmer) Adams. Born in Portsmouth, NH on July 14, 1944, Jon was the son of the late William L. Adams and Lois (Cole) Adams Morrison. In his early years, Jon traveled extensively with his family, as his father was in the armed services. Jon, himself, later became a member of the United States Air Force Reserves. Some of the places he lived, and loved, included Roswell, New Mexico and Anchorage, Alaska. He spent time at Winnacunnet High School in Hampton, NH, but graduated from Sergeant Bluff High School in Sioux City, Iowa, in 1962. He attended the University of New Hampshire. He met the love his life, Jan, at Daigle’s on Hampton Beach, where he was a cook; she was a waitress. Jan and Jon were married on June 1, 1968 at the First Congregational Church in Hampton (next to Jan’s childhood home on Winnacunnet Road). Jon’s many hobbies and interests included gardening, photography, and painting. He gave painting lessons to his grandchildren and nieces. He was an avid New England sports fan, but most fervently cheered on his daughters and grandchildren at their local sporting events. For 15 years, his happy place was the family’s second home in Conway, NH, where he cross-country skied with, hiked with, and hosted countless family and friends. Together, Jon and Jan have hiked many of the White Mountains’ 4000-footers. Hiking with Jan, his daughters, and his many good friends always brought Jon great joy. For years, Jon and the family spent time at Jan’s parents’ places in Maine; first on Sand Pond in Sanford; and later Square Pond in Acton, where the activities included waterskiing, boating, ice-fishing, snowmobiling, and endless Whist card games. Jon was very close with his father-in-law, the late Arnold B. “Bud” Palmer, and told great tales of times boating and blue-fishing with Bud. They were both members of the Hampton River Boat Club. Jon and Jan spent many winters in Naples, Florida. Golfing has been a love of theirs, and in his retirement (after 35 years with the New England Telephone Co.), Jon has been mowing the fairways of Sagamore Golf Club in North Hampton, NH, Pease Golf Course in Portsmouth, NH, and most recently Breakfast Hill Golf Club in Greenland, NH. He also drove for Regal Limousine in North Hampton, NH. For the last several years Jon and Jan have enjoyed cruising the world, often with good friends. They cruised as recently as March, to some of their favorite islands in the Southern and Western Caribbean. In addition to his wife, Jon is survived by his children; Hon. Jennifer A. Lemire and her husband Lee D. Whitney II of Stratham, Julie Garry and her husband Kenneth B. Jr. of Middleton, and Jeanne A. Calias and her husband Nicholas P. Jr. of Stratham. He is also survived by his brother, Roger Adams of Cambridge, MA, as well as his seven grandchildren, who were the lights of his life: Kayleigh; Jon; Isaac; Elena; Palmer; Isabella; Julia; and his two step-grandsons, Alex, and Andrew Whitney. In addition to his parents, Jon is predeceased by his siblings, Mark Adams, and Christine Adams Johnson. Family and friends will gather to honor and remember Jon for a period of visitation on Thursday, May 11, 2023, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Remick and Gendron Funeral Home, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Jon’s funeral service will be held on Friday, May 12, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will take place immediately following the funeral service at High Street Cemetery, 140 High Street, Hampton.
