Joseph M. Souney

Hampton - Joseph M. Souney, a devoted husband, loving father, and cherished grandfather, passed peacefully on September 29, 2024, in Newburyport, MA, surrounded by his devoted wife and children. Born on September 9, 1946, in New Britain, Connecticut, Joseph's life was one marked by kindness, generosity, and dedication to his loved ones and community. A graduate of St. Thomas Aquinas High School in New Britain, Class of 1964, Joe furthered his education at Merrimack College in North Andover, Massachusetts, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and was a member of the Sigma Beta Kappa fraternity. His professional journey began at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (PNSY), where he worked in the Nuclear Engineering Department for 35 years, ultimately retiring in 2003. After retiring from the PNSY, he worked part-time for RediCheck North, LLC, reviewing construction plans for a decade. Joe was an active communicant at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church in Hampton, where he taught confirmation classes, served as an Eucharistic Minister, and contributed to the church through his involvement with the Holy Name Society and the Men of St. Joseph. Joe loved spending time with his grandchildren. “Paka,” as the grandsons called him, was unapologetically proud of them and enthusiastically attended as many of their activities as he could. Joe thoroughly enjoyed his time coaching baseball and basketball with the Hampton Youth Association. He found joy tending to his yard, walking along the beach, and traveling with Karen and dear friends. Joe fought Alzheimer’s for 6 years and, through it all, retained his wonderful smile and his ability to give great hugs. He is already missed beyond words. Joe is survived by his wife of 55 years, Karen (Quinlan) Souney of Hampton, who he met during his time at Merrimack College; his daughter, Jennifer (Souney) Messier and her husband, André Messier III of Exeter, NH; his son, Joseph M. Souney Jr. and his wife, Irina Calante of Hampton, NH; and his grandchildren, André Messier IV, Aedan Messier, and Christian Souney. Joe is also survived by his sister, Elizabeth "Bette" Bonjean of Punta Gorda, FL; his brother-in-law, Kevin Quinlan and his wife Mary of Marblehead, MA; and several nieces, nephews, and many dear friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Everett F. and Elizabeth A. (McNally) Souney, his sister Germaine Slattery, his niece MaryBeth (Young) Smith, and his brother-in-law Thomas Quinlan III. Joe’s family thanks all the people who have helped in so many ways during the past six years. The family would also like to thank everyone at Avita of Newburyport for the beautiful care and love they gave Dad during the past seven weeks. Visitation will be held from 4 – 7 PM on Friday, October 4, 2024, at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton, NH. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 AM on Saturday, October 5, 2024, at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, 289 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Burial will follow in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association by clicking here or a charity of one’s choice.
