Raymond C. Sturgis

Plant City, FL – Raymond C. Sturgis, 76, of Plant City, formerly of Seabrook, died January 21, 2016 at South Florida Baptist Hospital. He was born in Portsmouth, NH, November 2, 1939 and was the son of the late Raymond and Eleanor (Felch) Sturgis. Ray attended Hampton, NH schools, graduated from New Hampton Preparatory School in New Hampton, NH and later attended the University of Miami in Florida. He was employed for many years at the Baily Corporation in Seabrook and for Foss Manufacturing in Hampton. He also served as Bail Commissioner for over 30 years. In his younger years he helped his father at the former Sturgis Funeral Home in Hampton. A longtime resident of Seabrook, Ray enjoyed his vegetable garden, making his special relish, cooking, clam digging, feeding the birds in his backyard and was a chaperone for several class trips overseas for Winnacunnet High School. He resided in Florida the past 3 years. He was the husband of the late Phila E. (Knowles) Sturgis who predeceased him in 2010. He leaves three sisters, SueBetty Sturgis Young and husband Skip of San Antonio, FL, Charlotte Sturgis Van Slyke and husband Larry of Pelham, AL, Edythe “Gay” Sturgis Wolfe and husband Patrick of Greenville, SC, three stepsons, Milan W. “Butch” Knowles, Sr. and wife Estelle “Cookie”, Richard L. Fowler, Gary K. Fowler and wife June all of Seabrook, nine grandchildren, Myra, April, William, Raymond, G. Keith II and Robert Fowler, III, Milan and Phylena Knowles and Heather Bibaud, many great and great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by his great grandson, William L. “Willy” Fowler, Jr. whom he raised, his brother, Guy E. Sturgis and his stepson, Robert W. Fowler, Jr. Visiting hours will be from 6-8 P.M. Friday, January 29, 2016 at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Services will be held at 12 noon Saturday, January 30, 2016 at the Rand Memorial Church, 134 South Main Street, Seabrook. Burial will follow in the Wildwood Cemetery, Seabrook.
